A refuge from war The Papo family BETWEEN 1992 and 1995, two million Bosnians were uprooted by the civil war that tore their country apart. When the Serbians began their siege of Sarajevo on April 6, 1992, many residents fled the Bosnian capital, often without being able to let loved ones know where they were going. Faced with the. loss of families and communities, some fled to Western Europe, while others spent years in refugee camps before finding a country willing to accept them. Although the 1995 Dayton Accord, which ended the Bosnian civil war, theoretically provided for their return, few of the Bosnians displaced by the conflict have gone back. Since 1991, Australia has resettled 30,000 refugees from the former Yugoslavia. A designated immigration agent of the Federal Government, Jewish Community Services has sponsored six Bosnian families to Sydney in the last five years. Two of the families shared their stories with the Australian Jewish News. This report by Leora Moldofsky
